Photo of Bumblebee on white clover flowerThere seems to have been an explosion of bumble bees this summer.  They are seen working hard collecting nectar on all the flowers, as well as literally getting under foot when walking across the field.  They seem to particularly like the clover flowers.  Although there are Photo of a bumblebee on a clover flowerso many different flowers currently in full bloom, that there is a lot of nectar options to choose from.  I have spotted a few honey bees too but not as many as the swarms I have seen in previous years.  Fortunately I have spotted no wasps or hornets, which makes enjoying evening meals outside very pleasant.

I have read that as well as honey bees, even the bumble bee is under threat.  So I like to think that in a corner of South Somerset, they are not just surviving but thriving.  Interestingly there are apparently 24 different types of bumblebee found in the UK.  I am afraid I am not sure what species these pictures are of.  Nor am I sure whether they are just one species or several different ones.  Any knowledgeable thoughts would be much appreciated!

Meanwhile, around the farm, the children are almost complaining about the frequency of our barbeques because the weather has been so lovely.  What is nicer than Photo of red edible nasturtium flowerssitting out watching the wildlife, while enjoying food cooked over an open fire with homemade charcoal?  I believe that how to make the charcoal will be the subject of a future blog from Rich.

There are plenty of salad leaves now ready to go with a barbeque.  My personal favourites are the edible flowers.  Nasturtiums as pictured, can be safely eaten and add a lovely splash of colour to your food.  Which brings us back to the bees enjoying the flowers, while we relax and enjoy watching their hard work.
